Lauderdale County, Miss.
Law enforcement officials say this time of year is ripe for scam artists and other thieves.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says he has had a report that quick-change artists have been in the area, so even store clerks and cashiers have to be on guard.
He advises at any point in a transaction that a cashier feels like he or she is being rushed or distracted, they should stop the transaction, close the register and call for assistance from a manager or another employee.
"Prevention is much more important in these kind of instances than trying to always catch that person who might attempt or who might actually be able to get away with this," said Calhoun. "It is much easier to prevent by making sure employees know the proper policies and procedures."
Lauderdale County officials have had a successful arrest this past year. They say the crime is a misdemeanor offense and hard to prosecute, so prevention is key.
