Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker says the new Kemper County coal plant is a step in the right direction for our state's economy.
Wicker toured the lignite plant this past week. In terms of economic development, Senator Wicker says the coal plant is one direction we need to go in, saying Mississippi is blessed with lignite and that the state should be using it. Wicker says we should also expand our drilling in the Gulf of Mexico to get back to where it was before the 2010 oil spill.
"We are a country rich in natural resources," Wicker says. "Coal, natural gas, crude oil. We're just not using it and we're throwing up roadblocks. And again, part of the ecnomic situation is we're sending so much money overeas to people that don't like us where we could be spending it here and creating jobs in America."
The lignite plant is set to open in May 2014.
