Less than 24 hours after a man was shot Saturday at George Reese Courts in Meridian, police were called to the scene of another shooting. At about 1 a.m. on Sunday, another person was sent to the hospital after being shot - this time accidentally.
"In the 2400 block of 5th Street, there was a lady walking down the street, and a car came by and started shooting. She was hit in the left leg, right above her knee, and it broke the bone," said Lt. John Griffith of the Meridian Police Dept.
Meridian police don't know how many people were in the car or were shooting. But the MPD does believe she was not the intended target.
"About all we know at this point on the initial investigation is that she wasn't who they were shooting at, but we're not sure at this point who they were," Lt. Griffith said.
The MPD says there were no others injured in this shooting, and the victim is now in stable condition.
Police say there are often certain precautions you can take to avoid dangerous situations, but in this shooting case it seems that there wasn't much else the victim could have done.
"In this situation, I don't really see anything that victim could have probably done any differently," Lt. Griffith explained. "I hate to say it this way, but just being at the wrong place, at the wrong time."
The victim, along with several other witnesses, were able to provide a description on the shooter and vehicle. The MPD is currently following those leads.
