The deadline was issued Wednesday in an order from the Supreme Court.

WDAM-TV asked the court Jan. 13 to lift the injunction on its broadcast ordered by Youth Court Judge Mike McPhail.

McPhail ruled WDAM failed to provide evidence of a need in showing the video.

WDAM contends McPhail's order is an "unconstitutional prior restraint" on its ability to "publish truthful information of public significance."

A former detention center employee obtained the video and provided it to WDAM. The television station agreed to blur the faces of the juveniles.

The Society of Professional Journalists has joined an amicus brief supporting WDAM.

“This smacks of unlawful prior restraint. If we allow courts to demand ‘evidence’ of a need to show video, next they’ll want proof of a need to tell any story. That would slip sadly into a new arena of the courts restricting press freedoms," said SPJ President Hagit Limor.
