Mississippi State's Cowbells in Jeopardy

The Southeastern Conference is poised to levy fines against MSU for violating the league's noisemaker policy related to its tradition of ringing cowbells at games.

The issue was first addressed at the SEC's summer meetings. The conference made a one-year rule allowing Mississippi State fans to ring cowbells, a proud symbol of the school, provided it was in dead ball situations like halftime, time outs and after touchdowns.

But cowbells are easily heard during games, especially when opponents are on offense.

MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin said fans must cooperate or cowbells could be banned.

No. 23 MSU (6-2, 2-2 SEC) hosts Kentucky (4-4, 1-4) Saturday.

I am surprised that people are so hardcore to want to hold on to something that hangs around the neck of a farm animal. I remember as a child attending a game at MSU and not enjoying the experience due to the cowbells. I felt the "noisemaker" lacked class and sophistication. It left a true impression on me that I still hold on to today.

I am a true MSU fan and I believe that the cowbell is a tradition. It should stay. Why does the SEC have to mess with our traditions. I feel sorry for Ole Miss because their traditions have been taken away. Why do we sit back and allow this to happen? My husband takes his cowbell but he has been abiding by the "Ring" and "Yell" signs in the corner of the Jumbotron. He doesn't want to see the cowbell go anymore than anyone else. We need to start "Respecting the Bell" or we will no longer be able to have any fun at our home games. My question is what will be next? No tailgating? No use of the Junction? Just go and sit on our hands an watch the ballgame and go home. What fun would that be? NONE!!! So I urge my fellow Dawgs to RING RESPONSIBLY!!!!!!!!

Come on a college football game is not the opera. Will they outlaw face/body paint next because the colors distract the players? Most college players will go on to have normal jobs while a few will go Pro. If the players or fans can't handle cowbells then don't go. Anyone that has been to a Saints home game know what noise is really like and they play through it just fine.Having said that the drunk behind me that rings the cowbell constantly for no reason is likely to get _______ slapped.

I think it is stupid that the SEC wants to change everything. Cowbells have been a part of MSU since as long as I can remember, so why is it such a problem now?

I am a PROUD MSU fan! And I love the COWBELL!!! I knew at the MSU-Memphis game that the COWBELL was going to be in jeopardy! MSU has campaigned to keep the bell and done everything they can to get the fans to "respect the bell" however, it seems that at every game I have been to, they seem to ring it louder when they are not supposed to. I hate to see us loose this tradition, but if the fans are so defiant as to not follow the rules, then what do you expect? The school can not afford to continue to pay the fines that will be imposed because of the stupidity of the majority of the fans that refuse to abide by the guidelines set forth in order for us to keep our beloved tradition alive. So why does this surprise any of you? How are you going to fight to keep it? If you wanted to fight to keep it you should be "ringing responsibly" !!

Oh rowdy you are just upset because you now have a black bear as a mascot.
But really why so negative? Think about it this way, how many more traditions and rights as a free American are you ready to continue giving up?

Maybe the cowbells could be restricted to a certain area like the student section. Then the persons that it offended could get relief from the loud noise. One of the games that I attended the person behind me rang the bell the entire game never stopping not even for halftime and it was miserable.
