A motorist crossing the railroad tracks at Hawkins Crossing and Highway 11/80 in Meridian was hit by a train Tuesday afternoon.

Amazingly, the driver of the pickup truck was not hurt. Meridian police say he tried to cross the tracks while the crossing guard was down.

"Apparently went around the crossing guards for the railroad and was struck by the westbound Amtrak," said Capt. Jeff Lewis of the Meridian Police Department. "Luckily he's O.K. He walked out of it with no injuries at all."

Lewis said no train passengers were reported hurt either.

To the friends and family of this man, I am very sorry that I hurt his feelings. I have no excuses for my hurtful words. I will think very hard before I comment again like this on a story. Everyone else should tell this man " I am sorry " too. God Bless. Thank you, Becky for what you said in your comment.

Ed, I didn't say this man was a child, a teenager or a foolish young adult. He is an elderly man. I was only concerned about this man's well being. I pray that this man gets the help he needs, so nothing like this will ever happen again or much worse. My prayers are with the family and friends of the man. God bless them.
