Southern Baptists have severed their relationship with a Texas church over its openly gay members.
Southern Baptist Convention leaders meeting in Louisville, Ky., this week voted that Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, had not heeded the denomination's constitution.
The church drew criticism from some Southern Baptists after gay member couples asked that their portraits appear in a church directory. The church later published a directory without the family portraits.
Broadway Board of Deacons chairwoman Kathy Madeja said the church was "disappointed" in the vote that means the convention won't seat the Texas church's messengers, or representatives, at its annual meeting. Madeja says the church has done nothing to run afoul of the convention.
The denomination's constitution says churches that "affirm, approve or endorse homosexual behavior" are to be considered not in friendly cooperation with the convention.
