Extradition Pending for Harrell

The investigation of the death of 7-year-old Somer Thompson in Florida led to Meridian and the arrest of 24-year-old Jarred Harrell Thursday. Thompson's body was found in a Georgia landfill last fall.

Harrell was taken into custody Thursday as a "person of interest" in the case by federal authorities at 1520 22nd Avenue Heights in Meridian. It was only after his initial arrest Thursday that Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie says his deputies got involved.

"We actually came in contact with him at the FBI office, at the U.S. Post Office in downtown Meridian," said Sollie.

Sollie says federal officials asked deputies to take Harrell into custody. Harrell is charged with 29 counts of possession of child pornography. Sollie said all of the charges stem from evidence discovered in Clay County, Florida.

ABC News reported that pictures and videos described as disturbing were found on Harrell's computer and turned over to authorities by his former roommates.

According to Sollie, Harrell moved to Meridian recently, and at this time, is not facing any charges here.

"We have no history of him having any charges or court appearances in this area," said the sheriff.

For the charges he's facing in Florida, Harrell's bond was set at $1,000,000. He's awaiting extradition back to Florida.
