Ward Says Issues Fueled His Campaign

Republican Giles Ward of Louisville unseated 2-term incumbent Democrat, Gloria Williamson, in Tuesday's voting.

Ward is a 5-term alderman for the town of Louisville and a retired regional manager for Georgia Pacific. He said he entered the race with a conservative platform for economic development, new jobs, and protecting citizens' rights.

"I really feel that in the last eight years we have seen the direction of our particular senate votes on key votes moving further and further to the left," said Ward. "In particular there was a lot of concern for lack of support for the Castle Doctrine that was voted on in 2006. Our opponent introduced a bill earlier this year that would have increased income tax rates on Mississippians with taxable income in excess of $15,000. Those are the types of issues that hard working people in Mississippi just simply don't feel they can take care of, so we ran on those issues. "

District 18 is comprised of Winston, Leake and Neshoba counties. Ward will take office in January.
