The Mississippi Legislature will convene its 2008 session beginning Tuesday. There will be some new faces representing local districts.
Among them is senator-elect Giles Ward, who defeated incumbent Democrat Gloria Williamson in the general election in November.
Ward will be sworn into office Tuesday. He said he plans to immediately get to work on issues important to his constituency.
"There's some issues concerning ad valorem equity on the actual assessment of chicken houses," said Ward. "And if you fly over this district, you can see what a huge impact that has. The governor said yesterday that there's a need for us to look at the entire tax code and consider revamping all of it. I think that is the greatest opportunity we have to get this much needed relief."
Ward is from Louisville and will represent the 18th Senate district, which includes Neshoba, Winston and Leake counties.
