Ronnie Shows has dropped out of the race to replace retired Sen. Trent Lott.
The former U.S. representative from Bassfield announced his decision in a statement to the Clarion-Ledger newspaper.
Shows said he can't raise the money needed to defeat former Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in the March 11 Democratic primary, and then take on U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker.
Wicker is a longtime Republican congressman who was appointed to fill Lott's post on an interim basis. He will face the Democratic nominee in November.
A message left by the Associated Press at Shows' home was not immediately returned.
Shows said in his announcement he would have trouble raising the "millions of dollars" to compete against Musgrove and Wicker.
