Gregg Harper defeated Charlie Ross in the Republican runoff today in central Mississippi's 3rd congressional district.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Harper had 29,351 votes, or 57 percent, compared to 22,178, or 43 percent for Charlie Ross.

Harper will face Democratic nominee Joel Gill in the November general election.
In conceding the race Tuesday night, Ross pledged his support to Harper.

Cong. Chip Pickering, a Republican who has held the seat for ten years, did not run for re-election.

I do think a candidate's past record, if he or she has one, is relevant when running for office. To Mr. Ross, these were achievements, just like the ads Mr. Harper had that he's a fine, Christian fellow. Caring is a good thing. But voters should inform themselves of the record of a public official and make intelligent votes. It's our responsibility. Caring is fine, but action is also needed.

CONGRADULATION TO MR. HARPER FOR HIS WIN. PEOPLE RUNNING FOR OFFICE DO NOT PUT OUT THE RIGHT MESSAGE TO VOTER. PEOPLE DO NOT REALLY CARE WHO YOU SIDED WITH WHILE BEEN A SENATOR OR WHATEVER---OR HOW LONG YOU WERE IN SERVICE OR WHAT BILL YOU AND THE GOVERNOR PASSED. I THING THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS HOW MUCH YOU CARE. CARE ABOUT CHURCH---CARE ABOUT FAMILY AND REALLY CARE ABOUT FRIENDS AND PEOPLE. ALSO HOW YOU HELP PEOPLE TO BETTER THEMSELVES IN LIFE. IT BOILS DOWN TO THIS----"IT'S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW, IT'S HOW MUCH YOU CARE" ALSO THEY SHOULD ONLY LIST A VEW THING'S THEY WISH TO ACCOMPLISH IN THEIR OFFICE WHEN ELECTED. ( NOT THE OLD THINGS BROUGHT UP IN THE PAST) VOTER ONLY RETAIN 20% OF WHAT THEY HEAR. I THING AGAIN CARING ABOUT PEOPLE WOULD TOP THE LIST. I AM SORRY MR ROSS COULD NOT HAVE WON TOO.

I applaud both Mr. Harper and Mr. Ross for conducting themselves like gentlemen in this race. We don't see that too often in politics.
