Sheriff Shows Contrasts in Gas Budgets

The gas budget of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department continues to be an issue.

Sheriff Billy Sollie presented numbers at the Monday meeting of the Council of Governments that show every department in the county, except his and emergency management, saw major increases in their gas budgets from last year.

Some other departments in the county saw as much as a 250 percent increase in their gas budget.

"It's obvious that three members of the board of supervisors chose to fund those operations that directly impact their day to day operations, while they chose not to fund those who impact the citizens of Lauderdale County," said Sollie.

"I don't have any answers to how that took place at this point, but I have been looking into it," Hitt said.

Supervisor Hank Florey, who voted in favor of the budget, attended the COG meeting Monday, but declined to comment on the sheriff's numbers.

If the sheriff has a problem with the Board he should run for office. Once he is in that position maybe he will see how bad the sheriff department is being ran. We all have to live under a budget and my budget can not afford for him to spend all of my tax money on his force (which is to large for this county). He wouldn't need so much gas if he cut his force down to the size it should be.

He has every right to question the budget numbers! Why would they up other budgets by 250% and cut the sheriff's budget so sharply? Think about it, if your paycheck was cut by a large percentage would you be able to maintain the type of lifestyle that you have now? Probably not, because when money is taken away things have to change! The fault is not with the sheriff and he has every right to question the board. More power to Billy Sollie...don't go down without a fight!

if gas budget is an issue. Why do deputies pick there children up from school in a patrol car everyday? Also, why do they drive the patrol cars home? What are our taxes paying for? So I really don't understand what Billie is complaining about because the taxes payers pay for them to do outside business driving. I know he uses his patrol suv for more than police business. I will remember election time and i'm sure everyone else will too!

What about the salary for the deputy that just got hired after being in Iraq? He isn't even working patrol and guess how much he is being paid for bad eyes.
