Democratic and Republican parties in Lauderdale County prepared early for a long night watching election results.

With record voter turnout, the parties continued campaigning Tuesday.

"People are energized, and of course, we are hoping to turn the state blue," said Democratic chair Melba Clark.

"The Republican turnout has been extremely strong today, and the turnout in general has been strong. But I've been very pleased at what I've seen across the state with the Republicans," said Scott Carmichael Republican chair.

These camps say they have their eyes on the U.S. Senate race between Ronnie Musgrove and Roger Wicker, and the Third Congressional race between Gregg Harper and Joel Gill.

Republicans say they feel confident they will win these two elections. But the buzz is the presidential race.

"Everyone's excited. They've realized it's going to be a tight presidential race. We may not know tomorrow morning who has won the race," said Clark.

"So we're just overwhelmed with the number of people that come out to support and vote in this historic election," said Carmichael.

Both camps will be celebrating....the Democrats at the Quality Inn of Meridian and the Republicans at their headquarters downtown, 2118 Front Street.
