Supervisors Analyze New Budget

The county budget was of concern for the Lauderdale County board of supervisors at its Thursday work session.

"I'm still disappointed that we're not going to be able to get that millage off the people," said District 2 supervisor Wayman Newell.

Specifically, the budget in question is that for next fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1.

"We really need to have a surplus built up at the end of each year," said county administrator Mike Sumrall. "Sept. 30 is the end of our fiscal year. We don't get a bulk of our revenue in until January, February, and March when people pay their property tax."

The problem is, expenses continue throughout the fall when funds are low.

"In the past we've had to borrow money from other funds, some of the bond-issued money, borrow it, to carry on operations during the fall," Sumrall said.

Sumrall says that a balance of several million dollars is needed for each department at the end of the fiscal year. In some years, some departments have ended the fiscal year with negative balances.

"If we could build a $3 million surplus we wouldn't have to borrow every fall," said Sumrall.

The county administrator said he is as low as he can go in spending for the county. Sumrall said several departments within the county will end with positive balances at the end of this fiscal year.

Although there are concerns, Sumrall says county taxpayers can still expect to see a tax cut next year.
