A bill being proposed in the Mississippi Legislature could offer free college tuition to students in the state.
It was discussed at Monday's Council of Governments meeting in Meridian.
COG president, Mary Perry, told the group that state Rep. Wilbert Jones is sponsoring a bill to help child dependents of military members killed in the line of duty in Iraq.
"He has proposed a bill that I think all Meridianites and Mississippians would be proud of, and that is, that any child who loses a parent in Iraq to death would be sent to college free of charge," said Perry. "And that bill is now traveling through the House and possibly will go to the Senate."
The bill stipulates that tuition would be covered and the college would have to be in Mississippi.
The measure has been introduced but would have to make it through others hoops to become law.
