Primaries Set for Tuesday in Mississippi

Primary elections do not allow voters to cast ballots for members of different parties. Voters must choose which primary they will participate in, the Democrat or Republican.

"You have to declare which way you're going to vote, because you have to vote a straight ticket in any primary," said Lauderdale County circuit clerk, Donna Jill Johnson. "It's nothing new. It has been over 20 or 30 years that this has been going on."

Something else that has not changed are the rules that apply if a runoff election is needed following the primaries.

"However you vote on Tuesday, you have to vote the same way three weeks later in a runoff. In November, you vote any way you want to. That's a general election," said Johnson.

According to Johnson, there's also something that you need to know when it comes to voter registration cards.

"You do not have to have your voter registration card to vote. The card helps the poll worker often in locating your name and making sure you're at the right precinct," she said.

Finally, when it comes to a voter who wants assistance at the polls, officials say they must ask a poll worker for it.

"They have to declare that they need help," said Johnson."Again, this is an old law. This is nothing new either. That just protects the integrity. And the poll workers are not supposed to assist voters on election day unless it's a rare situation and the person doesn't have anybody with them, they don't know anybody and maybe they're scared of the touch screen."

Polls statewide will open at 7 a.m. and close 7 p.m.
