Sen. Mike Chaney, of Vicksburg, won the Republican nomination for insurance commissioner Tuesday.

He defeated Ronnie English, of Vancleave, and will face the winner of the hotly contested Democratic primary race on Nov. 6.

Democrat Gary Anderson defeated longtime insurance commissioner George Dale, ending Dale's three-decade tenure. Dales' re-election campaign struggled from fallout from Hurricane Katrina and a feud with a wealthy trial lawyer.

In incomplete and unofficial returns, Anderson had 51 percent of the vote. Dale had 49 percent.

Anderson says voters wanted change. Dale says fallout from Hurricane Katrina and an advertising attack against him by attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs were factors in his loss.
