Legislative Session Resumes Tuesday

The Mississippi Legislature resumes its regular session Apr. 20.

It interrupted the regular session in order to get a better look at budget projections, before taking a final vote.

Sen. Terry Burton of Newton said he fully expects the budget recommendations to be ready for consideration, and for the process to take no more than a few days.

"When you're dealing with a moving target, and the budget numbers are constantly moving. As you know, for 18 months we had reductions in anticipated revenue because the money didn't come in," said Burton. "So the governor had to make several rounds of cuts. We did have one good month of revenue. That was the month of March. We're not exactly sure what April, May and June are going to look like, but we don't think we'll make up enough ground to recover what we've lost so far the fiscal year."

Burton said this divided session is not costing the taxpayers any additional money.

He says the session will still be within its regular 90-day time frame. It has just been stretched out over several more weeks.

  • by Fully fund MAEP more educators needed! Location: Meridian on Apr 18, 2010 at 07:22 AM
Ms legislators please fully fund MAEP. Our schools do not need to lose teachers. They are overcrowed already and behavior problems only rise when class sizes increase. We do not need to lose their electives and other extra curricular programing because these are the classes that motivate and keep them coming to school. Mississippi does not need to be losing jobs, it needs to be increasing jobs. I have recently talked to a student teacher that said the class sizes are so large and behavior is overwhelming. She stated she was going to reconsider her choice and go into another area if educational funding is cut this year because this is too much to expect anyone to do with out adequately providing students with what they deserve.
