Alabama voters decided by a 2-to-1 margin Tuesday to support the withdrawal of $437 million from a state trust fund to help balance the General Fund budget for the next three years.
With 73 percent of precincts reporting statewide, the proposed constitutional amendment was passing 65 percent to 35 percent.
Gov. Robert Bentley's press secretary, Jennifer Ardis, said he was excited by the broad support.
An opponent, House Democratic Leader Craig Ford of Gadsden, said Alabama will be back with the same budget problems in three years unless the Republican-controlled legislature acts.
