Jackson, Miss. Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says Senate candidate Chris McDaniel would cut federal education dollars to his state if Republicans choose the tea party insurgent over six-term Sen. Thad Cochran.
Barbour told The Associated Press Friday that he and other Cochran supporters are ready to spend big money to translate what McDaniel means when he talks about cutting government spending. McDaniel, for example, has said the federal Education Department is unconstitutional.
Barbour says abolishing the department would translate to big cuts to education dollars and other federal funding Cochran has sent home as a former Senate Appropriations Committee chairman.
Neither candidate won the GOP nomination in Tuesday's primary. Tea partyers and the GOP, including Barbour, are girding for the June 24 runoff.
