Lauderdale County's District 5 supervisor, Ray Boswell, announced Thursday his switch to the Republican Party.

In a written statement, Boswell said he has had overwhelming support and encouragement to do so. He said "his core values have always been more in line with the Republicans."

"I have been the most conservative member of the board of supervisors while serving as a Democrat," wrote Boswell. "I will continue as I have in the past to watch every penny spent by the county to ensure that it is spent wisely."

In his statement, Boswell said he'll continue to have job creation, low taxes, better roads and efficient operations as his goals.

But Boswell said, "in contrast to some Republicans, I will not be bought out by special interest groups or the wealthy. I will serve all the people."

Two other Republicans have already qualified to run for the District 5 seat, Kyle Rutledge and Peter A. Russell. One Democrat, Daniel Cook, has qualified so far. The qualifying deadline is Mar. 2.
