Governor Pursues Legislation to Protect Gun Rights

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant says he wants the state to resist any presidential order that might restrict gun rights.

Republican Bryant says he's acting in anticipation of Democratic President Barack Obama issuing executive orders aimed at banning military-style assault weapons, high-capacity ammunition clips.

Bryant said Wednesday that he's asking legislative leaders to consider a bill saying Mississippi law officers would not have to enforce any such orders from the president.

Mississippi resisted federal authority during the civil rights era, but Bryant says there's no comparison now.

He says back then, Mississippi leaders were opposing federal efforts to expand civil liberties but now he's resisting federal attempts to restrict liberties.
