Jackson, Miss.

Gov. Phil Bryant has signed a bill that removes the repealer from Mississippi's organ donor law. The repealer required the Mississippi Legislature to periodically review the program and renew it.

Senate Bill 2217, signed Thursday by Bryant, removes the necessity of legislative review of the program. The organ donor law passed in 2008.

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency is the state's federally designated organization that oversees the procurement of organs and tissues for transplants.

MORA CEO Kevin Stump says in a news release that more than 1,300 Mississippians are waiting for an organ transplant.

Stump says Mississippi's donor registry currently has the names of 641,000 people who have signed up to donate organs and tissue for transplants.
