Bryant Backs New Abortion Restrictions

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant says he supports banning abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

A similar bill was filed last year and died when a Senate committee chairman didn't bring it up for a vote.

The Republican governor spoke Thursday to pastors at a luncheon sponsored by Pro-Life Mississippi.

Friday is the deadline for the state's only abortion clinic to comply with a 2012 law that requires anyone performing abortions at the clinic to be an OB-GYN with admitting privileges to a local hospital.

The clinic filed a federal lawsuit challenging the law, and was given time to try to comply.

An attorney says the clinic won't shut down Thursday, even if it can't meet requirements. The Health Department would set an inspection later.
