Meridian, Miss. The Meridian City Council continued its series of budget planning meetings Tuesday.
The council is faced with a deadline of Oct. 1 to have a finalized budget in place for fiscal year 2014.
Council members have been meeting with department heads to discuss the city's needs and how to spend what is likely to be a tight budget. Incoming revenue is expected to be about what it was for the current fiscal year.
"We have to make sure that they're getting the best for the money, the taxes they're paying, the best for our community, while providing our department heads and our departments with those finances that will allow them to provide those core services and other things for our citizens," said council V.P and Ward 2 councilman, Dustin Markham.
Markham says the council is examining community development and the fire department this week. Last week the focus was on the police department and public works.
The new budget usually goes to a vote in mid-to-late September.
