Council Pursues Contract Penalties

The Meridian City Council is looking to recoup some of the cost overruns in the city hall renovation project.

The council Tuesday approved beginning the process of assessing penalties to the contractor.

City hall re-opened in 2011, about 2.5 years after it was originally scheduled to be completed, at about double the originally-expected cost.

As part of the contract, there was a $500 per work day penalty for delays in the project. Council officials say they think the contractor should pay it.

"We've waited; the building is complete," said council president, Dr. George Thomas. "We're in the building. It's time to be collecting those damages. We had to wait and make sure everything was O.K. in the building once we were in it. We've been in it long enough now to know that everything's working. So now is time to proceed with those damages."

City officials said they don't have an exact estimate on how much would be owed by the contractor, but it could be hundreds of thousands of dollars.
