The newly-elected Lauderdale County Council of Governments met Monday to elect officers for 2012.
City councilwoman Mary Perry will continue as president. City councilman George Thomas was elected vice-president. And circuit clerk Donna Jill Johnson will serve again as secretary.
Tax Assessor James Rainey again reminded property owners about filing for homestead exemption.
"It basically gives them tax credit on their homes, and this helps out tremendously on their taxation on their homes," said Rainey. "And our staff will be glad to assist you in filling out the application for this."
The homestead exemption is offered only on the dwelling you own and occupy.
The tax assessor's office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline to apply each year is April 1.
