Democrat Johnny DuPree says he will seek a fourth term as Hattiesburg mayor in 2013.
DuPree made history in August 2011 when he became the first black candidate to win a major-party nomination for Mississippi governor. He lost the November general election to Republican Phil Bryant.
Candidates have until next March to qualify for the Hattiesburg mayor's race.
A current city council member, Deborah Denard Delgado, says she plans to run for mayor as a Democrat.
The Hattiesburg American also reports Dave Ware, a Republican city councilman, is another possible mayoral candidate, although he has been vague about his plans.
