Scott County, Miss. With Scott County schools on the brink of a possible government takeover, many student athletes could suffer the consequences. If the governor approves the plan for takeover, many teams won't be allowed to compete for state championships.

"They got pretty good teams, it's going to hurt them boys and girls really bad if they can't compete in those state games," Sam Smith of Forest says.

But Smith and other community members are worried that the students are being punished for someone else's wrongdoing. The school board has voted on a state because of alleged improprieties by the superintendent. Sebastopol's mayor and boys' basketball coach Greg McGarrity says his team has worked hard for an 8-0 record in district. Now his players have been worried they could be punished for something they don't deserve.

Sebastopol's mayor and boy's basketball coach Greg McGarrity says his team has an eight-oh-record in district. And with championship games only about three weeks away, his players have been worried they could be punished for something they don't deserve.

"Teachers are doing their job. Our state test scores have been great, we're high-performing. What else do you say? Why would you spank a kid for not doing anything wrong?" Mayor McGarrity says.

His players are concerned about their future games. McGarrity reassures his team that hopefully, all will work out for the best, as time is running out.

Playoffs are in just three weeks. McGarrity says in the meantime, he's reaching out to state officials and doing everything in his power to keep his players on the court.

He says he believes the state does understand how deserving his team is, and those officials will work to help them.

"Being mayor in this town, and being their teacher, their coach, their mentor, is to stand up for them and what their rights are."

McGarrity hopes to hear an answer in the next few days.
