The latest term of the Lauderdale County grand jury says the county faces liability and safety issues.
In a report filed Monday, the grand jury asked for immediate action to be taken to repair the county courthouse.
Ceiling tiles and plaster fell over the weekend. The panel called the ongoing problem "deplorable" and said the county is subject to lawsuits. It also noted the presence of mold in the building and asked for an air quality check.
The Lauderdale County Courthouse was built in 1905 and extensively re-modeled in 1939. A third floor courtroom was added more recently, but the building hasn't changed significantly in decades.
