Harper Sends Insurance Bill to Obama

Congressman Gregg Harper says President Obama has been sent his bill removing an obsolete federal requirement to publish and distribute a booklet listing vehicle insurance costs based on how easily each model is damaged.

He says the U.S. Senate voted unanimously on Friday to approve the bill. It was proposed in 2011 by the Obama administration and cosponsored by Harper, a Mississippi Republican, and New York Democrat Bill Owens.

Harper says the information is useful to insurance actuaries but buyers can easily get it from insurance agents.

He says the booklet has cost the Transportation Department and taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars since it was first distributed in 1991. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will still be able to publish the data on its website.
