Henson Reacts to Council Changes

Meridian, Mississippi There are changes coming to the Meridian City Council after two long running councilman lost in the runoff election.

Ward 3 councilwoman Barbara Henson says she has thoroughly
enjoyed working with Jesse Palmer and Mary Perry, but says life is full of changes. Henson tells Newscenter 11 she is looking forward to working with a new council.

"It will be an exciting thing to see how they react to the government rules," Henson says. "You know, all of us going in thinking we're going to do this, we're going to do that, and everything is just going to turnover a new leaf."

Henson, of course, is running unopposed in Ward 3. She and Palmer have both served on the council since 1989. That's one term short of Ward 1 councilman George Thomas. Meanwhile, Perry and Palmer wish their opponents well.

"Well, if he wants to ask me, I don't mind telling him," Perry says, referring to Kenneth Dustin Markham. "I've always been like that."

"I plan to give her all the material that i have that will help her to do the job that she's going to have to do it," Palmer says, referring to Kim Houston, if she wins the general election on June 4th.

The current city council will continue meeting through the month of June. Council seats in Wards 2 and 3 are already decided. Wards 1, 4, and 5 will be decided in the general election on June 4th. After the inauguration, Perry and Palmer both plan to enjoy life post council.

"Oh, I'm just going to keep living and keep working at things that I've been doing before," Perry says.

"I had contemplated retiring this year, but I ran into those things that I thought need to be done," Palmer says.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 4th.
