House Passes A.G. Bill

The Republican-led Mississippi House has passed a bill that would limit the powers of the Democratic attorney general.

House Bill 211 passed 59-55 Wednesday.

Proponents say it will prevent Attorney General Jim Hood from imposing his views on elected and appointed officials.

Now, officials need Hood's approval to hire other lawyers. The bill would also require all outside legal contracts be filed with a state board, and require the board to approve contracts worth more than $100,000.

The vote came after long debate and a series of narrow party-line defeats for Democratic amendments.
Hood, the only remaining elected statewide Democrat, opposes the bill and says it is unconstitutional.

A previous bill, considered last week, failed after it was challenged for violating parliamentary rules.

The bill now goes to the Senate.

I agree with "Know", "Anonymous on Feb 17, 2012 at 02:40 PM" & "Patriot." AG Hood should've kept his mouth shut. He is the lone (D) & wanted to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Well, he got his say & the opposition got theirs. He had done his job very well, but I give him an F- for character. What was he trying to prove anyway? Just the jack donkey he really is? Maybe more people should have voted for the other guy then the legislature would not have needed to even consider such an absurd slap in the face. Just maybe people will remember this "stunt" he pulled next election & vote for the other guy.

The AG was already hiring outside Lawyers. It was his "cronies". Now, State Department heads will just have the "Option" to hire outside if needed. If not, the AG will still be used. It's not costing more. Look at what Hood gave his buddies over the last 8 years. Wake up people.

Do you not understand that the AG was a part of the whole pardon process before it ever happened? He should not have acted like he didn't know what was going on until after the fact. He knew.

Like the Democrats didn't and don't ramrod their own ideas and squash the opposition when they're in control! That's the lock-step mantra of the left! Republicans want murderers and rapists on the street, dirty water, and to throw grandma over a cliff. Keep drinking the Democrat Kool-Aid and collecting your check and all will be well....until they get to YOU... and YOU are inconvenient to their goals. Jim Hood shuttles work to his cronies! Will you ever wake up?

Someone with the nickname 'Patriot' supports the idea of a one-party state. Duly noted.

The people of Mississippi elected a Republican majority. Used to be a Democrat majority. The only problem for you is your side is on the outs. Listen, if this gets passed and the public doesn't like it, they'll speak at the polls next time. That's how it works. We still have a multiparty system. The dems and reform candidates just lost.

Come on, Republicans, stop playing around with half-measures like this already. Just outlaw all opposition parties, you know you want to. A one-party state is good enough for North Korea it should be good enough for us.

That's gonna cost the state more for an outside firm, when the A.G is there for the purpose of the state!!!! I don't want murderers and rapist on the streets!??? That's the only reason they passed it, Someone finally stood up to ole Haley!!!!!
