Jackson, Miss. Jackson Police Chief Lindsey Horton has retired, effective immediately.

In a news release Monday, Mayor Tony Yarber said Assistant Chief of Police Lee Vance will serve as interim police chief. Vance has been in law enforcement since 1987.

Horton served nearly 30 years with the Jackson Police Department.

No reason was given in the news release for Horton's decision.

Yarber won a special election for mayor in April, succeeding Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, who died in office.
