The president of Meridian Community College Thursday discussed the possibility of building a storm shelter on the school's campus.
Dr. Scott Elliott said the 15,000 square foot shelter would be located adjacent to the MCC soccer field and near the school's residence halls.
The next step to getting the facility built will be the college seeking out an attorney general's opinion to make sure it's legal for MCC to deed that property to Lauderdale County.
"With a safe room that can have a thousand person capacity right next to our residence halls, that would just elevate the safety and security of our students, I think, many fold," said Elliott.
Elliott says when the facility is not being used for a shelter, it can be used for community and campus meetings.
