Mississippi money minders are meeting later this month to start planning a state budget for fiscal 2014, which begins next July 1.
The Joint Legislative Budget Committee gathers Sept. 17-20 to hear spending requests from state agency directors. The public meetings are held at the Woolfolk state office building, near the Capitol in downtown Jackson.
House Appropriations Chairman Herb Frierson says lawmakers will have to be cautious as they write a budget because the state economy is still recovering.
Frierson, a Republican from Poplarville, says he expects agencies to request more money than the state will have available to spend. That's not unusual during the early stages of the budget process.
The full House and Senate will vote on budget details sometime in the spring.
