Meridian, Miss. Mississippi lawmakers are set to begin work on the 2014 legislative session this week in Jackson.
Lawmakers will officially begin the new session at noon on Tuesday. Among the topics on the agenda will be the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid expansion, education, public safety, and of course the budget, which is $5.6 billion in general expenditures.
"We have recommended a budget that uses no one-time money on recurring expenditures," Senator Terry C. Burton says. "We recommended a budget that funds all recurring expenditures with recurring money. That's a huge, huge effort on our part and I give Lt. Governor Reeves, Speaker Gunn credit for moving the budget committee in that direction."
Senator Burton says one-time money will be used on one-time expenditures like improvements to government buildings.
