NAACP Seeks to Block Voter ID Law

The Mississippi NAACP is asking federal officials to block the state's new voter ID law.

Carroll Rhodes, attorney for the group, says he believes the law will diminish minorities' voting strength, violating the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Gov. Phil Bryant has a May 18 deadline to sign House Bill 921, which would require voters to show a driver's license or other identification at the polls.

Mississippi is still required to get federal approval for any changes in election laws or procedures.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says the voter ID law is closely patterned after Indiana's law that has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

However, Rhodes says that doesn't matter because the histories of Mississippi and Indiana are different.

I read a comment that got my attention, the problem with our Mississippians they will beieve anything if it's the white thing to do, Democrat and Republican parties shouldn't be about black vs white, because every white person isn't Republican and every black person isn't Democrat, I believe if i'm not making $150,00.00 to $200,00.00 a household then i'm not voting Republican, you rather vote for someone who will take yor money and make the rich richer, wow, Make your politican work for their money and tell the President to change geers and stop giving money away to people who don;t want to work, But A Republican Candiate all he wants is your money what you don't have.

Hey NAACP, these necks are right, i prefer everyone to have ID, but if you know something i don't know, then keep the party going

If you are a legal citizen then having an ID card should be no problem. Those who are not legal or who choose not to carry an ID card then forfeit their right to vote. Half of the country doesn't pay taxes, I'd like to see an ID card for that!!! They shouldn't vote either!!

"Liberal Democrat" I sincerely hope you're being facetious. If not, you're an idiot and you should go play in rush hour traffic.

Democrats can only win by using scare tatics and government handouts. I honestly believe if your on welfare or foodstamps that you shouldnt be allowed to vote because you will only vote to recieve more handouts.

This would not be a problem if they had to show picture ID to get their welfare, food stamps, or housing assistance. They all would have picture ID's then.

The color of ones skin does not hold one back. When you think the color of your skin should entitle you to more, that is what holds you back.

mr rhodes please explain in detail how this law will prevent someone from voting. if you truly stand for the advancement of colored people as the name of your organization says you do, maybe you should busy yourself educating the people you claim to represent. explain to them how providing a picture id will protect their right to vote by preventing anyone else from voting in their place. you(naacp) are filling peoples heads with falsified scare tactics to give yourself a reason to exist

We are glad that the national association for the advancement of colored people are standing against this. Even though the law really will have little effect on them because almost everyone has a photo Id. But it is essential that it is blocked so that the illegal aliens can vote. These poor people come here illegally so they don't have to pay taxes and they live here. If they can't vote then someone like a Republican might get in office and force them to pay taxes and take their government assistance away from the women who had babies here. That's not fare. That is why we put Obama in office, so we can get laws changed were people who are here legally and work can help support these poor people. We liberals and Democrats must really stick together right now and re-elect Obama so we can accomplish are main goal and transform are nation to were everyone gets something from those who have more. I represent a very large organization of Democrats and know I am speaking for most. Only a few are confused but their heart is right with Obama.
