Legislation to name the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge for the late Sam D. Hamilton, a Starkville native and former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has been passed by Congress.
U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., sponsored the bill in the Senate and Rep. Gregg Harper did the same in the House.
The bill, passed Wednesday, now goes to President Obama.
Cochran and Harper say Hamilton's dedication to preserving wildlife habitat and natural resources earned him respect among many people.
Hamilton died in February 2010. At the time, he was director of the USFWS and worked 30 years for the agency.
