PSC Sets Hearing for Kemper Coal Plant

State utility regulators will meet Friday in Jackson to consider issuing a temporary certificate sought by
Mississippi Power Co. to continue work at its Kemper County coal-fired power plant.

The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled Mar. 15 that the Public Service Commission failed to lay out its reasoning clearly when it changed the terms under which Mississippi Power could build what it calls Plant Ratcliffe in Kemper County.

Initially, the Public Service Commission gave Mississippi Power and the Sierra Club until April 2 to submit proposals. The order setting the PSC meeting was issued Wednesday.

The key issue is not whether the plant is a good idea, but whether the PSC adequately laid out its rationale.
