Petition Started to Protect Historic District

Some people who live in the Poplar Springs Historic District are doing what they can to stop Dollar General from opening a new location there.

An online petition has been started. It's called called 'Stop Dollar General's Sabotage of a National Historic District in Meridian, Mississippi'. At least 130 people have signed it.

The organizers of the petition say they were actually against the moratorium, and would be O.K. with Dollar General, if it were built the right way.

"Everyone in this city would love to see this spot developed. We would," said Meridian resident Sarah Johnson. "This neighborhood would love to see this stuff developed. But any building here in this spot needs to respect the historic nature of everything around it."

The petition may be viewed and signed by going to change.org. A link is provided below.
