Former Democratic Mississippi congressman Gene Taylor will stay on the Republican Party primary ballot opposing incumbent U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo.
State Republican Party Chairman Joe Nosef says the party executive committee voted 25-10 Wednesday to certify Taylor's place on the ballot.
Some committee members, led by Sue Bush, of Hattiesburg, wanted to bar Taylor from running for the 4th District congressional seat as a Republican, saying they don't find Taylor's conversion to the GOP sincere.
Taylor was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1989 and served until he was defeated by Palazzo in 2010.
Nosef says that Republicans have to pledge to support the eventual nominee to be a candidate or voter in a party primary, but their past as Democrats can't be held against them.
