Residents Take Property Complaint to Supervisors

The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors voted to deem a property in the county 'a public nuisance' and look into cleaning it up.

The county will go in and cut the grass, clean up the property, and use a weed killer to try and keep the weeds from growing back so quickly. But this only a quick fix.

Residents of Locust Street in Lauderdale County told the board they're tired of 5461 Locust Street being overgrown with brush.

They asked their supervisor, Josh Todd, to see if the county could find a remedy.

While the board is stepping in, officials say a permanent solution must be found.

"Yes, it's only a one time fix," said Todd. "We can go in there and get it cleaned out, but we can't just keep coming back, like a regular yard man would do once a month, once or twice a month. We can't do that. So, we can go in there, do the initial clean up, and then after that we'll have to sort of leave it in the hands of the community."

The reason the county will now step in is because the owner isn't taking care of the property and can't be found.

"We can't find them. They may have been easy to reach, but we tried to contact them by letter and phone and we've just been unsuccessful at doing that," Todd said.

With the overgrowth of the brush on this property, it's easy to see why area residents are concerned, especially with young children in the area. Now that the board has approved looking into clearing out the property, what's next is for it to be assessed to see how much it will cost.

"I will go out there and assess it, look at it, and see what the cost will be, and we will go from there," said Harris Wilder, county road manager. "I will come back to the board and give them an initial cost, what it will take to clean this place up and get it safe for the kids in the community."

No clean up will take place on the property until the board approves the cost.
