Florene Rhodes Johnson, 90, of Ocean Springs, formerly of Lawrence, died May 17, 2009 at home.
Services will be on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at the Newton County Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Saunders officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Cemetery.
She was born April 27, 1919 in Duffee, the daughter of Thomas and Annie Rhodes.
She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Martha Tipton and her husband, Dr. Jon Tipton, of Marietta, OH, Jean Cahill and her husband, Bill, of Ocean Springs, with whom she made her home the last 7 years, and three sons, Bill, and his wife, Sandra, of Prentiss, Tom and his wife, Judy, of Madison, and Joe, and his wife, Karen, of Pontotoc, two sisters, Opal Gressett of Fayetteville, GA, and Evelyn Puckett of Chunky, MS; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Herbert Johnson, her parents, one brother, Howard Rhodes and one sister, Thao Clearman, both of Duffee.
She was a graduate of Center Ridge High School in Chunky and attended East Central Community College in Decatur. She and her husband raised their family on a farm south of Decatur; two years prior to that they farmed in Portales, NM. She was employed at the Decatur Shirt Factory as a foreman and at the Newton Company as an examiner. Upon retirement they moved to Lawrence where she was a member of Newton United Methodist Church and the Lawrence Homemakers Club. The family had previously been active members of the Hickory United Methodist Church. She spent the last 11 years of her life in Ocean Springs.
Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, May, 19, 2009 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
