Funeral services for Cecil Lummus Ivy will be held Friday, June 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Newton County Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Steve Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Newton County Memorial Gardens. Newton County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ivy, 88, of Decatur, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Infinity Hospice. Cecil Lummus Ivy was born on April 23, 1921, in Insure, to the late Robert and Elna Rebecca Lummus Ivy of Hickory. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country in the Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he came home and worked in the oil industry. He worked and traveled all over the southern part of the U.S. and also in Central America. When he retired from the oil field work, he was a bus driver for the Newton County School District. He retired from driving the bus, to be the devoted and dedicated caretaker, for his wife, Sue. He was a loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. His granddaughters and great-granddaughters were the joys of his life. Mr. Cecil enjoyed visiting with family and friends, as he never met a stranger, and opened his heart to all he met. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a member of Clarke-Venable Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving son: Cecil Eugene Ivy, and his wife, Alice of Belle, Chasse, LA; two grandchildren: Phyllis Ivy and Rebecca Ivy; two great-grandchildren: Monica Collongues and Brittany Collongues; He is also survived by several brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Sue Boswell Ivy.
Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
