Funeral Services for Mr. Robert John Thrash, age 83, of Decatur, MS will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at the Newton County Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, MS with Rev. Philip Marshall and Rev. Mark Vincent officiating. Burial will be in the Newton County Memorial Cemetery Gardens in Newton, MS. with Newton County Funeral Home of Newton in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Thrash died on Monday, August 24, 2009 at Laird’s Hospital in Union, MS.
He was a retired car salesman. He was a member and retired deacon at Clarke Venable Baptist Church in Decatur, MS and served in the past as a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Thrash was a decorated war veteran who survived five major battles in World War II, namely the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Medals of honor he received were: The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart, The Combat Infantry Badge, The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with Silver Star for 5 major battles, The Good Conduct Medal, The WWII Victory Medal, The Rifle Sharpshooter Cross, and The Honorable Service Button. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Jackson Thrash; one brother, Woodrow Thrash; and one sister, Jennie Thrash Pace.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Gwendolyn Faye Cleveland Thrash; one daughter, Sheila Marshall (Philip) of Moss Point, MS; ; three grandchildren, Lauren Marshall James (Joel) of Bedford, TX, Marilyn Marshall Wishert (Matthew) of Bedford, TX, and Madison Marshall of Moss Point, MS; one great-grandchild, David Anthony Wishert of Bedford, TX; one sister-in-law, Katherine Thrash of Birmingham, AL; and one half-sister, Verna Mae Rash of Decatur, MS.
Pallbearers are: Matthew Wishert, Pope Thrash, Cory Cleveland, Bud Smith, Melvin Tingle, and Joel James. Honorary pallbearers are members of The Pals Sunday School Class at Clarke Venable Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 26, from 5-8 PM at Newton County Funeral Home of Newton, MS.
