Funeral services for John Roger Addkison will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Brian Rushing and Dr. Frank Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Newton County Memorial Gardens. James F. Webb Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Addkison, 89, of Newton, died Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Rush Foundation Hospital. The Winston County native was a 1938 graduate of Louisville High School and a 1943 graduate of Mississippi College, where he served as Captain of the Football Team, and President of the Senior Class. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy, in the Battle of Southern France, the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of Okinawa. He was an athletic coach at Rolling Fork, Newton, and Forest. He was a retired business owner, and was a former member of the Newton City School Board. He was member of First Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday School Teacher and Deacon, and was a current member of the Berean Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife: Carolyn “Kitty” Addkison of Newton; his daughters: Tamara (Phillip) Feldman of Mobile, AL; and Kitty (George) Ward of Newton; his grandchildren: Kristi McHale, Tangi McMahon, Luke Scoggin, and Courtney Sach; his great-grandchildren: Bailey McHale, Baine McHale, Mackenzie Scoggin, and Tyler Sach;
He was preceded in death by her his parents: Matthew and Ruby Addkison; one brother; Truitt Addkison; and his sister: Doris Bell.
Pallbearers will be: Luke Scoggin, Matt Addkison, Ronnie Melton, George Ward, Charles Thompson, and Jody Wagner.
