Mr. Brown, 96, of Meridian, died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Aldersgate Retirement Community. Arthur Grady Brown, Jr., was born April 30, 1914 at the Harris home place, South of Hickory. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in Blue Mountain, Mississippi and several places in North Carolina where he helped to build the Blue Ridge Parkway as a surveyor and draftsman. While stationed in Statesville, NC, he met and married Hazel Morgan. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, they moved back to Mississippi to resume the rest of their lives. A. G. retired from Illinois Central Railroad, working his way from the position of fireman to conductor, at his retirement. After Hazel's death, he married Mattie Ruth Culpepper. Through out his life, he was an avid fisherman, occasional hunter, and a very successful gardener, due to a life time interest in agricultural pursuits. He loved poetry and was a gifted writer. After retirement, he and Mattie Ruth traveled as long as their health permitted. The Browns moved to Aldersgate Retirement Community in Meridian where they enjoyed the various activities of their home and the wonderful, loving care of the Aldersgate staff. Mr. Brown was a thoughtful, tender, humorous man, though few people knew these traits, since he was also quiet, and introverted.
