Dr. Melvin Lewis Willils, Sr., age 65, was born to Mr. Louis and Mrs. Effie Willis of Hollandale, Mississippi on August 18, 1948. He was the oldest of six children born to this Union. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
He went home to be with the Lord on November 16, 2013 at 12:55p.m. in Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center, Meridian, Mississippi.
He was united in holy matrimony to Lillie Ree Gibbs on April 2, 1972. He recalled this day as a "beautiful one". Unto this union was born three children.
Melvin gave his life to Christ at an early age. After marriage he became a dedicated member of Elizabeth Baptist Church of Lauderdale, Mississippi where he served faithfully in various ministries for many years, including a member of the Deacon Board.
Melvin was brought up and received his formal education in the Hollandale School District. He received his (AA) Associated Degree from Coahoma, Jr. College of Clarkdale, MS; BS (Bachelor Degree) from Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, MS; MEd (Master's Degree) and EDs(Educational Specialist) from Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi; and his Doctoral Degree from Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, AZ. He had a passion for living the good life and enjoyed the finer things in life including, his fraternity, cars, clothing and jewelry.
Melvin began his educational career as a Math teacher at York West End Jr. High School. He also served as an assistant principal and principal at York West End for over twenty-eight (28) years. He also served as a D.A.R.E. Instructor for Sumter County School System, and Adult Education Instructor, and an Instructor at Meridian Jr. College, Meridian, Mississippi.
He was also employed for two years as a Mississippi Highway State Trooper, seven years as a Teach/Administrator Assistant for Hollandale School District, seven years as Teacher/Principal of Kemper County High School, DeKalb, MS, fifteen years as a Police Officer for the City of York, and four years a Mayor of Hollandale, Mississippi.
Service of remembrance for Dr. Willis will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 12:00 noon from York West End Jr. High School. He will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Richard Wilson, pastor of Smith Chapel Baptist Church(York) will deliver the eulogy. Interment follows in the Gibbs Family Cemetery, Cuba, Alabama. After the committal service the family will receive friends for repast in the Fellowship Hall of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Lauderdale, Mississippi. Visitation for family and friends is from 3-6:00pm. Friday evening (Nov, 22nd) in the Weatherly Chapel.
Melvin was blessed with a loving and caring wife for forty-one years: Mrs. Lillie Gibbs-Willis; three lovely children: Desma Depere Willis, Madison, AL; Melvin Lewis Willis, Jr., Huntsville, AL; and Andrae(Ebony)Willis of Huntsville, AL/. He has to beautiful grandchildren; Brandon and Summer Willis of Huntsville, AL; one sister: Mrs. Pearlie(Auther)Douglas of Hollandale, MS; a mother-in-law: Mrs. Edna Mae Gibbs of Lauderdale, MS; five sisters-in-law: Mrs. Ilora(James) Hayes, Houston, TX; Ms. Ella Gibbs, Lauderdale, MS; Mrs. Rachel(Harvey) Ward, Crowley, LA; Mrs. Loretta Lewis, Inglewood, CA; and Mrs. Mildred Willis of Hollandale; two brothers-in-law: Bennie and Randy Gibbs of Lauderdale, MS; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
